1. Research. First, I had to find out what I was actually supposed to be doing. I reread the assignment a couple times and then looked up Jessica Hische's Daily Drop Cap to see what it was all about. I loved browsing her previous letters and I finally figured out what I drop cap actually was.
2. Inspiration. This is the part where I Google image search "drop cap" and spend HOURS looking at other people's images. Haha. Because I find other people's work inspiring and also so I have a better sense of what mine could look like or branch of off.
3. Brainstorming. For this assignment, we were supposed to come up with some sort of context for our drop cap. In this case, I decided to come up with the context first, rather than matching a context to the letter after I'd done the letter. Of course, I got distracted rather quickly and was surfing the net when I happened to find myself on the Etsy website. As I was browsing, I noticed that their logo looked kind of plain and ambiguous like it could be for pretty much anything. Hence, I decided to do something about it.
4. Ideation. In thinking about Etsy, I made a mental list of words and ideas that came to mind in relation to it - handmade, vintage, art, accessories, fabric, etc, etc. I decided to run with the idea of handmade, so I kept that concept in mind when I went to design my drop cap.
5. Creation. This time around, I went straight to the computer. I already had an idea in mind, so I opened Illustrator and got to work with that pen tool I love so much. I drew the letter E with my concept in black and white first, then tweaked it until I was happy with it, and finally added some color. Here's what I came up with:
This is the original Etsy logo, just for reference.
And while I'm at it, I might as well plug Etsy itself - go check it out! They have some great things on there.
