Resource for Form & Comm

What is it about 20-somethings?

Some pictorial inspiration for our first form and comm III project as well as an interesting article about the current culture trends of the 20-somethings.

All done!  The color looks much truer in person.

35 Characters Posters

So my letter "J" is finally finished (painting it today was really fun), so I'm onto posters for the event.  Here are a few:

(Obviously I drew on the Scrabble Sheet for my inspiration, haha)

The Difference Between Art and Deisgn

I actually came across this a few months ago, but working on our "statements" for Form and Comm reminded me of it and I thought it was worth sharing.

Printing Technique for z-fold ACL Books

Create a new 5-page document in InDesign that's 18"x12" with a .5" margin just to be safe.  Unclick facing pages, also.

Page 1 is the top half of your poster, like so.  I lined up the top of my poster with the top margin on the page.  I copied my whole poster onto the page full size and just covered up the bottom half with a filled white box.  It won't print anyway since it's out of the print range, but just to keep myself straight.

Page 2 is the bottom half of your poster.  I lined up the bottom edge of my poster with the bottom margin of the page. (Some of the stuff in the center will overlap when you print, but that's okay - it gets cut off.)

Page 3 is the top half (the first 8 pages) of your book.  It doesn't matter where on the page you place them (as long as they're within the margin) since you'll cut off the excess anyway.  I used a bounding box so I knew where to cut after I printed.

Page 4 is the last 8 pages, or the bottom half of your book.  Same idea as above.

Page 5 is your cover with a 1/8" to 1/4" allowance for a spine added in.  (You can see my crop marks for the spine in the screen cap.)

Now all you have to do is export your 5-page doc as a .pdf, take it Trabant or wherever, print it 12"x18" without any scaling and you're set.  How I assembled it was to line up the crop marks and duplex the sheets first (page 1 with page 3 and page 2 with page 4), then cut out both sheets at once so I got nice even cuts.

If anyone has any more questions, you can Twitter, Facebook, or text me.  Hope that was helpful!

Process: DECODE

Sticking with form & comm this week, here's some process for my collage poster for Decode:

Also, my registration appointment for classes next semester is tomorrow!  Exciting!

Collage Inspiration

Since I'm still chugging away on my ACL books for type, I thought I'd post some inspiration related to form here instead.  Since we're working in collage, I thought this work by Calvin Ho was pretty interesting.

Check out more of his work here.

ACL Book Process

So I (or rather my class) decided I should go in the direction of the illustrated bird from the ACL logo for my companion book.  It was interesting coming up with ideas for all the pages and different things for the bird to do.  I still have to print it out and put it together, but here's some of what I have so far:

Fun Inspiration from Design Fetish

http://design-fetish.blogspot.com/

I stumbled across this blog the other day and I've been enjoying looking through old posts on it.  It's not all graphic design or typography, but any kind of good design is alright with me.  I love some of the quirky little things they have on there just for fun.  :]

Inspiration - books

In working on concepts for the ACL books, I drew from a few sources for inspiration.  In my online searches, I sifted through images, videos, and illustrations having to do with the festival.  For my concepts, I stuck to two different directions: one based on illustrations and the other based more on fan photos from past events.  Here are a few examples:

Process - Final Posters

So we're all done with posters (woohoo!) and here's my final one for the grid system.  I enjoyed the poster project, but I'm excited to move on to books.  I like that we're continuing with the Austin City Limits theme and exploring multiple aspects of the event in different forms.

Random System: First Shot

My two first attempts at the random system.  I know they're not totally out there like a lot of the random posters I've looked at, but they are pretty system-less and arbitrary, so we'll see how they go.

Some more inspiration this week

One of the reasons I love google is because sometimes it leads to strange and awesome things you might never have found otherwise.  While looking for inspiration for the random system, I ran across this flickr album that has some pretty sweet design, type, logos, and photography.

Sonic Form Inspiration

I know this isnt' for type, but this is the song I'm using for the latest form & comm project:

Take Five by the Dave Brubeck Quartet

I've loved this song for what seems like ages.  It's nice to just listen to it over and over and just paint/draw/visualize the music.  I know some people are already getting sick of the songs they chose, but I don't think I'll ever get tired of hearing it.  The play count for it on my iTunes is 17!

The album art is also pretty cool.  Sort of reminds me of Kandinski.  :]

Drop Cap Catch Up

So basically I'm really bad at taking photos and uploading them in any sort of timely manner, so here are my two most recent drop caps: a three dimensional "M" made out of thread and an "S" made out cut up magazine pages (found object) and some process photos to go with each.
